She's a Jersey, which is the smallest dairy breed. Full grown they weigh around 900lbs. But when they come out they only weigh 50 or 60lbs. They are super adorable and tiny, but are also fairly fragile (read that as fra-gee-lay) when they get sick, they get really sick, very quickly. So we do our best to make sure they don't get sick. Vaccines are part of that and so is hand feeding colostrum instead of letting calves just self serve from the cow. Unlike humans who get most of their immunity from their mothers while still in utero, cows get most of their immunity from the antibodies they get from colostrum. So we check a cow's colostrum to make sure it's the highest quality and feed with a bottle to make sure they get enough of it. So all of this to say that when I had Silas, even though I knew immunity was different between cows and humans, I was super obsessed with getting colostrum into him. Calves get a gallon of it ASAP and I had to get zen with only having drops myself.
